Ariane K. Kawata

PhD, Senior Research Scientist, Patient-Centered Research

Ariane participates in the design, analysis and interpretation of studies in health outcomes research and has responsibilities for scientific oversight and management of instrument development and validation of patient-reported outcome measures.

With expertise in structural equation modeling, factor analysis, program evaluation, and instrument development and validation, Ariane is knowledgeable in the development and analysis of conjoint/discrete choice experiments. She has specific interest in health-related quality of life, mental health, HIV and substance abuse and has conducted research in a variety of therapeutic areas, including mental health (schizophrenia, depression and anxiety), substance abuse and drug treatment, geriatric disorders (dementia and Alzheimer’s), neurology (headache and migraine), rheumatology (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout) and dermatology (acne and psoriasis). Ariane’s publications have appeared in Headache, Quality of Life Research, Clinical Drug Investigation, Cephalalgia, Journal of Rheumatology, International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, American Journal of Geriatric Pharmacotherapy, Pain Research and Treatment, Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology and Psychology of Addictive Behaviors.

She was trained at the L.L. Thurstone Psychometric Laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she received her PhD in quantitative psychology, with a minor in health behavior and health education.
