The E-RS (Evaluating Respiratory Symptoms) is a derivative instrument of the EXACT used to assess the severity of respiratory symptoms and the effect of treatment in patients with stable COPD.

Formerly known as the EXACT-Respiratory Symptoms Scale, the instrument was renamed the Evaluating Respiratory Symptoms measure at the request of the FDA (7 March 2016).

When referring specifically to its use in COPD, the qualified context of use, the name is “Evaluating Respiratory Symptoms in COPD (E-RS:COPD).”

The E-RS has been adapted for use in interstitial pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Please read here for more information on the E-RS:IPF.
